How to Clean and Care for Your Squishies (So They Last Longer)
A good squishy should last years, not months — but only if it's cared for properly. Foam and gel-core squishies are more delicate than they look. Here's how to keep yours squeeze-ready for as long as possible.
Cleaning Foam Squishies
Foam squishies (the slow-rise kind) are the most fragile when it comes to moisture. Never fully submerge one in water — the foam core can soak it up and never fully dry, leading to mold or a permanently squished shape.
Instead:
- Mix a small amount of mild soap with water
- Dip just a cloth or soft brush (not the squishy itself) into the mixture
- Gently wipe the surface in small circles
- Wipe away soap residue with a barely damp cloth
- Air dry completely before squeezing again — this can take a full day
Cleaning Nee-Doh / Gel-Core Squishies
These are more water-resistant since the membrane is sealed, but still avoid soaking. A quick wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap is usually enough. Dry the surface fully before storing so it doesn't feel sticky.
Storage Tips
- Keep squishies out of direct sunlight — prolonged heat and UV exposure can cause yellowing and speed up degradation
- Store in a cool, dry place; humidity is foam's enemy
- Avoid stacking heavy items on top of squishies for long periods, which can cause permanent dents
Signs It's Time to Retire a Squishy
- It no longer rises back to its original shape after squeezing
- Visible tears, cracks, or crumbling foam
- A musty smell that won't go away, even after cleaning (a sign moisture got trapped inside)
Taking a few minutes to clean and store squishies properly can easily double their lifespan — worth it if you've built up a collection you actually care about.
